BS7 Emission Norms From April 2029: What It Means for Bike and Scooter Buyers
India is preparing to move to BS7 (Bharat Stage 7) emission norms, which will be in line with Europe's Euro 7 standards. As per reports, the rollout will happen in phases starting April 2029 and continue until 2035. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has reportedly approved the proposed timeline, and draft notifications for each vehicle category are expected soon.
The big question for bike and scooter buyers: what does BS7 mean for two-wheelers? Here is everything you need to know.
Current Emission Norms in India
India currently follows BS6 Phase 2 (BS6.2) norms, in force since April 2023. These rules limit harmful gases from vehicle engines, such as nitrogen oxides (NOx), hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and particulate matter.
The earlier move from BS4 to BS6 also needed cleaner fuel, with sulphur content in petrol and diesel cut from 50 ppm to just 10 ppm.
What Will BS7 Change?
BS7 is expected to tighten emission limits further, with a stronger focus on:
- Ultra-fine particle emissions
- Real-world riding emissions, not just lab tests
- Emissions over the full life of a vehicle
- Stricter in-use compliance checks and market surveillance by third-party agencies
No Change in Fuel Needed
Unlike the BS4-to-BS6 switch, officials say BS7 will not need new fuel standards. Today's petrol and diesel will continue. The change will mainly be on the vehicle side.
What It Means for Two-Wheeler Makers
Bike and scooter makers will need to upgrade their engines and emission-control systems. This could include:
- Revised engine tuning (calibration)
- Improved fuel-injection systems
- Better catalytic converters
- Use of more eco-friendly materials
The exact requirements will be clear only once the government publishes the official notification for two-wheelers.
Do BS6 Owners Need to Worry?
No. As per reports, BS7 will not affect bikes and scooters that already meet BS6 norms. Existing owners will not have to upgrade or replace their vehicles. The new rules will apply only to vehicles made after the BS7 deadlines.
Should You Delay Your Bike Purchase?
Not at all. The two-wheeler timeline has not been announced, and BS7 will be rolled out gradually until 2035. Buyers can go ahead with their festive season plans without worrying about a sudden change in rules.
One possible impact in the future: since makers will need to add better emission hardware, BS7 bikes may cost a little more, as we saw during the BS6 switch.
